.Classrooms Without Borders: Faculty Rounding on Clinical Sites
The academic-practice gap in nursing is well documented. The inability to connect theory with practice is a significant barrier to delivering safe, quality patient care. Despite recognition of the problem and commitment to identifying solutions, gaps still remain.
The Classroom Without Borders project was designed to close the gap between classroom and clinical practice by facilitating knowledge transference. Faculty teaching foundational medical-surgical courses rounded weekly on students at clinical sites collaborating with clinical faculty to ensure that assignments were designed to achieve weekly outcomes.
Faculty provided a theory–to-practice immersion experience within clinical that included student-to-faculty handoff reports and Socratic questioning to promote clinical judgment. Classroom Without Borders educational intervention is an effective model to bridge the academic-practice gap.

Clinical Simulation is one of the most important methods that health care providers use to hone their skills.
We work directly with the FAU
CLINICAL SKILLS SIMULATION CENTER (pictured above) at the end or beginning of each rotation cycle.
The Clinical Skills Simulation Center applies sophisticated simulation and trainer technologies to educate medical students, residents, registered nurses, first responders, certified nursing assistants, home health aides and community healthcare providers. The Florida Atlantic University Clinical Skills Simulation Center (CSSC) integrates new simulation and trainer technologies into the curriculum for medical students and medical professionals in practice. The literature suggests, and we have observed, that participants will learn faster, become familiar with advanced technology, improve their clinical skills, enhance critical thinking, and become more self-assured in their skills while under the supervision of trained instructors.
